Sewage backup is not a cleaning job and it should not be treated as one. The water carries bacteria and the contamination goes wherever the water went, into carpet, pad, drywall and cabinet bases. Everything porous that it touched comes out, which is the line between this and a clean water extraction.
We contain the area first so nothing tracks through the rest of the house, remove and bag the affected materials, extract, then disinfect the hard surfaces and dry the structure. Air scrubbers run during the work to keep the aerosolised material out of the rest of the property, the same containment approach we use on mold remediation.
Do not run your own extraction equipment on a sewage loss. Household wet vacuums put contaminated aerosol into the room air, and the machine is unusable afterwards. Storm water that came in off the street gets the same treatment, which is covered on our monsoon flood cleanup page.
Technician insight
A backup that hits more than one fixture at once is a main line problem, not a fixture problem. Get a camera down the line before you spend money on the second cleanup.
